FINAL AFCON NATIONAL TEAMS TO BE KNOWN TODAY as Arsenal Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fails to guide Gabon to the 2019 tournament.

By Saleh Najmundeen/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

A 1-1 draw with Gabon secured Burundi the point they needed to reach the African Cup Of Nations for the first time in their history!

Burundi have qualified for their first ever in African Cup Of Nations, thanks goes to a 1-1 draw with Gabon, who will be missing in Egypt later this year.

Pierre—Emerick Abubameyang’s Gabon went into the match in Bujumbura needing to win only, but they were unable to clinch the victory which would have booked their place in the tournament.

The national teams that have already qualified to the 2019 African Cup Of Nations in Egypt are :

Group A
Senegal
Madagascar

Group B
Morocco
Cameroon

Group C
Mali
Burundi

Group F
Ghana
Kenya

Group J
Tunisia
Egypt

Group H
Cote d’ivoire
Guinea

Group I
Angola
Mauritania

Group K
Guinea—Bissau
Mozambique.

The CAF African Cup of Nations takes place from 21 June to 19 July 2019.

On 30 November, 2018, Cameroon was stripped of the right to host this year's AFCON due to infrastructural delays, the Book Harald Insurgency and the Anglophone Crisis and on 8 January, 2019, CAF awarded Egypt the rights to host it.

Hence a temporary change from the usual January to February calendar.

The CAF Executive Committee on 20 July 2017 decided to add eight teams to the usual 16 only, bringing the competing teams at the final to 24.

Africa has 54 countries, which means nearly every other African country now has an equal chance of qualifying.

Burundi's first time appearance is therefore to be expected.

Some of the teams in groups D, E and L playing on Sunday have qualified already but they need to honour their remaining fixtures to help determine the last eight places in groups A to K.

Armed Robbery at Wisconsin International University, Accra

By Berryl Elisha/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

A Mobile money vender at the entrance of Wisconsin University College located at Agbogba Junction was shot Saturday  afternoon  by some armed robbers.

The mobile agent, popularly known as Maxwell, was processing some money transfers as usual, when men broke into his office.

According to a by-stander, two men on a motorbike stood in front of Maxwell's office and one of them went into the vendor's office and feigned that he wanted to send some money, but pointed his gun at him, threatening to kill him if he refused to hand over his cash.

That was when the two men got into a fight.

The armed robber shot the mobile money agent in his  thigh, took the money and got back to his associate who also fired his gun. Both men went away on their motorbike, and left Maxwell bleeding as a result of the shooting.

He was later sent to the nearest health facility for treatment.

'Armed robbery in broad day light are we safe?, ' said a shocked lady student as she read the news on social media.

Paul Kodjo, an MBA student
claimed that it was the second time an armed robbery had occurred at the same place.

This is the time to call upon the local security authorities to find solutions and guarantee the safety of residents, students and staff of Wisconsin International University, Accra.

HEALTH SUPPORT FOUNDATION UNDERTAKES FREE MEDICAL SCREENING AT AWUTU PRISONS.

By Austin Beirut Quaye/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra – 13 March, 2019

The Health Support Foundation (HSF) celebrated the 62nd independence holiday with the inmates of Awutu prisons in Awutu, Central Region.

At least 65 members of the HSF led by James Mawuli Gawu, the  president, contributed monies and solicited donations in aid of their quarterly charity project.

‘When I was in prison did you visit me?,’ said James Gawu, paraphrasing the Teacher from Galilee.

The Awutu Prisons houses 250 male inmates and has 75 officers.

110 inmates benefited from free eye screening services.

Blood samples were taken from 150 inmates for  malaria tests; 98 proved positive.

Manicure and pedicure services were also provided for 130 inmates.

Buhuu, 35, convicted and sentenced for two years in 2017 for stealing  a smart phone was elated.

'I have never had a pedicure in my life,’ he said,  ‘It’s so refreshing and nice.’
He called for regular visits by HSF.

HSF, founded in 2014, has at least 500 members across Ghana.

At least 65 per cent of its members are health workers and the rest are mainly teachers, soldiers, journalists, engineers and non skilled volunteers.

They devote their time to quarterly charity projects of their choice.

WHEN YOU ARE A BROKE STUDENT IN A TRENDY CLASS.

Matilda Teni Ayine/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra – 11 March, 2019

Being broke can be so frustrating, uncomfortable and stressful.

It is especially so when you are a student in the university and you find yourself in a class of well-to-do students.

Students are unique individuals.

Sir Ken Robinson, a leading education scholar, is very critical of the lack of this awareness.

He stated  that schools that do well “employ teachers that treat students as individuals that need nurturing, not widgets that get blindly assembled'.

It is expected that tertiary level educators will be aware of these sensitivities.

When you want to participate in school activities - even when advertised as free – it is difficult if you don’t have money.

If your colleague students decide to organize an event that requires contributions or fundraising from students, you will certainly be left out because you do not have the “Doh”, our Ghanaian term  for Dollar or cash.

When lecturers in the universities do not give notes, but choose to sell their so-called “handouts” (pamphlets) or their own textbooks to students, it makes life harder.

Ditto for when each time they give an assignment andthey expect it to be typed and printed out.

All these examples cost money, I mean cash you have to give out instantly; this is Ghana.

So imagine what will happen to you academically if you have no money to purchase these books or even print out your assignments for submission?

Many education experts agree that the experiences of students improve only if lecturers and authorities take a personalized approach.

A university is one of the most interesting but difficult environments one can be in
There are a large number of students with different characters and attitudes from different backgrounds.

Competition persists in different areas of student life- especially fashion trends.
Fashion among students  puts undue pressure on students who do not have money but want to look good.

They are therefore sometimes compelled to engage themselves in negative acts in order to make money. For example,  some end up becoming prostitutes and internet scammers just to make money in order to afford  things  on the same level as their colleagues.

Even academic competition has its downfalls if it leads to high stress and anxiety, especially in younger students who aren't equipped enough to handle the pressure.

Students must learn to live within their budget.

Also, students must try not to give in to peer pressure and should always stay within their means.

Fellow students, no matter what you may be going through on campus, always remember this saying “no condition is permanent “. Your situation will not remain like that forever – it will surely change someday.

God’s time is certainly the best.

NAKED FACES (INDEPENDENCE DAY POEM )

By Dennis Okpoti

La Boni, Accra - 10 March, 2019

NAKED FACES (INDEPENDENCE DAY POEM )

They turned all our rivers to Gutters

And made all our leaders martyrs

They reduced us to three square meals a day

So we will love our chains ....

Intoxicating us with the mirage of freedom

Whiles colonizing our minds....

They led us to believe

That the more a culture modernizes they westernize....

So westernization is the bench mark for success...

They say Africa is a shit hole(Lakoo)

But they have forgotten who dug the pit 100 years ago...

When they came in with their empty merchant ships

And went with dozens of men packed like sardines....

We are a  people lost to time.....

A culture gone extinct....

Go and tell the Okaikois

And the Otumfuos

That we bought freedom

With  the currency of the neo-colonialists

LAST WEEKEND’S FOOTBALL GAMES IN PERSPECTIVE.

By Edward Brenya/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA
Wisconsin Accra – 10 March, 2019

Last weekend was one of mixed feelings for football loving fans.

There were heartbreaks for Liverpool fans, more injury worries for Manchester united, Atletico’s Alvaro Morata proving why it may be too early to write him off, Barcelona won yet another classico and most importantly Kumasi Asante Kotoko made amends for last week’s disappointing display in Zambia.

In England, Pep Guadiola’s Manchester City beat Bournemouth by a lone goal to regain top spot as Liverpool settled for a stalemate against Everton in the derby, dropping to the second position in the EPL after a frustrating week of draws.

In Spain, Barcelona maintained their impressive form by defeating fierce rivals Real Madrid yet again at the Bernabau further increasing their hopes of retaining the La-Liga while Atletico Madrid kept the pace by beating Real Sociedad via a brace by Alvaro Morata.

Bayern Munich kept the pressure on league leaders Borussia Dortmund with an impressive 5-1 demolishing of Borrussia Monchenglachbach away.

The Italia-Seria A proved to be a one-sided league, however, as Juventus beat Napoli to widen the gap further by 16 points though the game ended with both teams having a man sent off, more notably Miralem Pjanic in the 47th minute as he handle the ball.

In France Kylian Mbappe’s injury time winner won the game for Paris Saint-Germain after a below average showing from the league leaders against 18th placed Caen.

Finally in the group stages of the CAF-Confederations Cup Kumasi Asante Kotoko beat their Zambian opponents, Nkana FC by an impressive 3-0 score line to move a place up to the second position on the table to keep their hopes of qualifying to the next round alive.

WHY PEDESTRIANS IN GHANA RUN ON ZEBRA CROSSINGS.

By Abdul Rasheed Adamu/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra - 10 March, 2019

Pedestrians are always seen especially in the major cities of Ghana running for dear life where pedestrian crossing marks are clearly marked.

Do some drivers not know the meaning or are they plain stupid?

Vehicles must give right of way where the pedestrian crossing marks are clearly demarcated.

But in Ghana it is vice versa.

The aged and children find it difficult to cross the road due to speeding vehicles.

Even the energetic ones have to run while crossing the roads to avoid being knocked down.

Do you have any pictures to share of pedestrians runnig for dear life?

HAPPY HOLIDAYS OUT OF WORK.

By Belinda Tieku/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra - 10 March, 2019

Many employees get time off work either for a day, week or on a month’s vacation.

During this time, the employees get to rest and hopefully return to work refreshed.

Some employees struggle and get stressed most of the time.

Therefore holidays help them to release tension, refocus, as well as engage in their own personal interests.

Employees with unique roles in a company, have difficulty getting their back covered while away.

Some often leave “Out of Office” messages on their phones and emails which customers do not enjoy.

Well, we the employees who leave such messages do not enjoy it either!

Three teachers, who work at God's Grace International School, a private Basic School located in Abeka Lapaz, Accra, told me they were all excited to get their holidays.

Dennis Owusu, a JHS Science teacher said: ‘I shall take this opportunity to spend time with my girl friend’.

Josephine Bentil , a class one teacher told me that she plans to visit her people in her village. In spite of the long journey she always enjoys her trips to the village very much.

The third teacher was also happy about the fact that she will be resting at home.

In some institutions in Ghana where there are no holidays or vacations given, an employee's request for permission to go on leave becomes a matter of risking being replaced.

As you know, the unemployment situation in Ghana is bad and officials who are paid with our taxes care less about enforcing labour laws.

Will you submit your leave form and risk your job if you were in their shoes?

PLAGUES OF ANGER.

By Emmanuel Osei-Asante/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra - 10 March, 2019

*PLAGUES OF ANGER*

I sit amongst the flames of fury

Plotting your very demise

Never yielding to the cry of your anguish

Your stubborn pride causing your downfall

Your pitiful riches never saving you as you messed up my life

Your tears never able to quench my burning anger

As you beg for a drop of water

You laughed at the passing of those dear to me

Shifted your eyes from my suffering and
plotted my downfall

Now watch as I pour poison on the faces of your generation

Whose stubbornness are as hard as the bones of their predecessors

A mixture of a scorpion's sting and a snakes' venom

Will be nothing more than an eyesore

As I cut open the heavens raining thunder from the skies

With the storms by my side

I rock the edges of your inglorious foundations

The nest of anger I built for you were not enough

Hence I decided to open an account

Seeing my rage alone was not enough

So I want you to have a taste of it

As I smash your head against the wall

Pleading that suicide will be mercy

I turn a blind eye to your plea

All along I wait to hear you say

‘What is wrong?
How can I help?’

And those three golden words

‘I am sorry’

Yet all these elude me

Meanwhile I still await to hear those words

Till then, feel my wrath.

A WASTE OF LOVE.

By Emmanuel Osei-Asante/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra - 10 March, 2019

*A WASTE OF LOVE*

I wait in your humble presence

Awaiting your call

Yet you look over your shoulder and call another

I grit my teeth in pain and sadness

As my heart fails to comprehend this act

The sun that has always been close to you

Is not adored ever once

But the moon that only draws a reflection is what is worshipped

I cannot grasp the act that is being displayed

As everyday I cry with my head in my palms

Hoping and praying that you will see a sign

Yet my prayers are never answered

And I begin to question myself

‘Are my feelings not enough?
What gift should I get for you?
What kind of person do you like?’

I try to change appearances to meet your desires

And every single time and day, I get the same rejection

Only to be placed as a friend even though I long for more

It saddens my aching heart

Whenever I see you with the wrong person

Yet you smile and I tell myself

‘Everything will be alright’

Knowing deep down that I will never be acknowledged

Yet I continue to stand strong for our friendship together

Sacrificing more than I can give

Just to see you happy

Yearning deep down for your embrace

I doubt and tell myself

‘This has been nothing but a waste of love’.

A JOYFUL LOSS.

By Alexander Owiredu-Ofori/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra - 8 March, 2019

Manchester City were able to defend their title against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on February 24, 2019.

The Citizens, as they are often referred to, beat Chelsea 4-3 on penalty shoot out to claim the Carabao cup and add to the silverware in their trophy cabinet.

The West Londoners (Chelsea), with a dip in form in recent matches were able to hold Manchester City to their game for 120 minutes often leaving City fist rated.

This has been one of the best performances Chelsea have put up in a long while; a tough match that saw both managers  displaying  their rich coaching experience and tactics.

And even though Chelsea lost, you could still see smiles on the faces of their fans. Chelsea fans showed some signs of satisfaction with the way the players played as a team.

Eden Hazard and N’golo Kante still showed the world their worth once again with their dribbling, chances creation, interceptions, counter attacking and defensive capabilities.

Wembley Stadium was an atmosphere of mixed feelings with 80,000 fans cheering their respective clubs on to victory. Chelsea’s manager Maurizio Sarri this time round, had his selection and substitution right.

Below are some of the Chelsea players and their analysis;

Eden Hazard – He showed his class once again. As he does always, he was my MOTM in the game.

N’golo Kante – He confirmed that he is the best defensive midfielder in the world.

Emerson Palmieri - His performance on the day tells how ready he is to make it into Maurizio Sarri’s starting 11. He caused Bernardo Silva a whole lot of problems on the left flank.

Jorginho -  He was able to control the midfield as expected; taking Sterling off the ball to prevent dangerous counter attacks. It was unfortunate he was shown the yellow card.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – He is the future of Chelsea. His introduction in the 2nd half caused City's Olesandre Zinchenko problems thus preventing Zinchenko from doing his dangerous overlapping.

Rube Loftus-Cheek – Another future star for Chelsea. Showed Sarri how serious he is for the starting 11.

Kepa Arrizabalaga – Let’s forget about the little issues he had with the manager in the dying minutes. He pulled up serious saves when the Citizens looked dangerous.

Antonio Rudiger – He was really solid at the back. Blocked City’s attackers from causing harm.

Chelsea were not lucky in the end but with the performance they put up, they still left some smiles on the faces of their fans. They lost but it was a joyful one.

PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO DELIVERS SONA IN FULFILMENT OF ARTICLE 67.

By Betty Baffour Awuah/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-Ghana

Wisconsin Accra - 7 March, 2019

Article 67 of the Ghana’s Constitution requires the President to deliver the State of The Nation’s Address (SONA) at the beginning of each session of Parliament.

Every president under the fourth Republican constitution has fulfilled this mandate.

In his third State of the Nation’s Address to Parliament,  President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, said he had instructed the leadership of his party, the New Patriotic Party, to invite the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, for a meeting on vigilantism.

Making reference to the by-election violence in Chereponi, Talensi, Atewa and Ayawaso West Wuogon, the president said Ghanaians had experienced too many incidents of violence in bye-elections and people still have terrible physical and emotional scars as a result of this.

‘The security services of the country will be on standby to assist this meeting,’ the president said. ‘If voluntary disbandment by the parties is not feasible, then I will initiate legislation on the matter.’

On the economy, the President said that he will not allow the country's economy to collapse under his watch, despite the economic challenges his government inherited.

He outlined a number of initiatives that he believes are in the right direction for getting the economy back on its feet.

On football, he stated that the Normalisation Committee is working to ensure that football-related activities return to normal, a year after they were halted because of corruption.

The President also told Parliament that the justice ministry and the sanitation ministry are working together to introduce bye-laws that will enforce cleanliness and try sanitation offences.

He re-emphasised his promise to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

WHY IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATED?

By Florence Boateng/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra – 8 March, 2019

Many women across the globe join in the celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) without knowing the history behind the celebration.

For over 100 years, International Women’s Day has been set aside to celebrate the economic, cultural, political and social achievements of women.

In the early 20th century, women became more active in their protests against oppression and gender inequality, leading marches and campaigns to demand equal rights.

During  a conference of working women in 1910, Clara Zetkin of Germany’s Social Democratic Party proposed that a day be set aside every year across the world to celebrate women and reinforce their demands.

The proposal was ultimately accepted and put into practice starting in Germany and Europe and spreading across the world over the years.

The first International Women’s Day was observed 8 March, 1914, even though the celebration day was decided in 1910.

In 1975, the United Nations announced International Women’s Day as an official day of observance for all its member countries.

Years later, the world body also instituted annual themes to promote the celebration of the day such as “celebrating the past, Planning for the Future” and “World free of violence Against Women”.

This year’s theme is “Balance for Better”.

It is meant to promote a future in which both men and women are equal in all aspects of life.

According to the IWD website, purple is the internationally recognized colour to symbolize women whilst the combination of green, purple and white is meant to represent women’s equality.

Every country has its special tradition for celebrating the day.

In Italy, for example, the day is celebrated by giving women a mimosa blossom.

In Ghana IWD is usually celebrated with a speech event by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and supported by the media. This year's speeches were broadcast live by the media to raise awareness.

At Wisconsin, staff and students shared messages on social media and discussed women's issues during lectures.

You can celebrate the day by posting pictures on social media and use the hashtags #BalanceforBetter and #IWD 2019.

People also share pictures of the women in their lives to celebrate the day.

The day is not simply a celebration.

It is a call to action for everyone to continue to push for complete gender equality.

A happy International Women’s Day to everyone.

#Be Strong

ANCELOTTI STUNNED BY PSG EXIT.

By Saleh Najmundeen Ahmed/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra - 8 March, 2019

Former Paris Saint-Germain head coach Carlo Ancelotti was left stunned by the club’s Champions League exit on Wednesday at the round of 16 tie.

After their UEFA Champions League (ECL) surrender, Carlo Ancelotti said he will have jumped off a bridge if he was in charge of Paris Saint-German.

PSG wasted their first leg lead in England and were marched out of the ECL on away goals by Manchester Unied in last -16 tie on 6 March.

PSG boss Thomas Rachel’s led 2-0 following the trip to Old Trafford, Manchester United’s home, but were beaten 3-1 in Paris, where Marcus Rashford’s VAR penalty decision awarded him in the  94th minute  sent the Ligue 1 giants out.

Ancelloti, Napoli’s current head coach, who led the capital club to Ligue 1 glory in the 2012-13 season was stunned.

‘It was incredible”, said silver-haired Ancelotti to Sky Sport Italian. “If I had been on the bench, I don’t know what I will have done.  Probably find the closest bridge and jump off it.’

On Thursday, 28th February, President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo delivered his third state of the nation's address to the seventh Ghanaian Parliament.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo highlighted what his government has been able to achieve so far and the challenges it faces.

‘This is the state of play,’ he admitted to the poor sanitation situation but, promised to prosecute offenders henceforth.

He speech centered on different sectors of his government.

The president announced that the national parade for the 62nd Independence anniversary celebration will be held in Tamale, Northern Region.

PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO SCORES SIX-ME-LUDO ON THE STATE OF THE NATION’S ADDRESS; WHAT NEXT?

By Beverly Ever Nhyira/ School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA

Wisconsin Accra – 6 March, 2019

Moving forwards or backwards?

How can we determine this?

Well for now, let’s just stick to literal content; limiting ourselves to the new regions that have been created.

Let’s face it; all the government wants to do is parade its achievements in front of the nation.

It’s a syndrome that is found in all political and social events and this state of the nation’s address is not in short supply of such preening  and self-congratulation.

On top of this list was the newly created regions.

So as of now, president NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO can wear the the badge of honor as the president to have actually seen to the execution of this request.

Perhaps he's scored a six on the ludo dice! But those of us who play ludo know that scoring a six is not necessarily good news.

‘Mr Speaker, this past week, the grounds of Jubilee House, the seat of our nation’s presidency, have resounded to a lot of celebrations, as we marked the handing over ceremonies of the Constitutional Instruments to the six new regions in our country. It has taken 18 months of very hard work and some complicated maneuvering to get to where we are today.’’

Let's wait and observe how well  these newly created regions serve the development of our country and the aspirations of all of  us.

STATE OF THE NATION'S ADDRESS 2019.

By Edem Duvor/School of Communication Studies, WIUC-GHANA
Wisconsin Accra – 6 March, 2019

The president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, met with parliament to deliver his third state of the nation’s address as mandated by the constitution.

His address touched on what his government has been able to achieve, their challenges, programmes and projects they are working on.

There were some key things the president talked about, even though he centered on many sectors of his government.

1.62nd Independence anniversary celebrations

As part of efforts to reinforce the unity that recently was established in the Dagbon state, the Independence celebrations will be moved to Tamale, the Northern Regional capital. This is the first time the celebrations will be moved out of Accra.

2.New curriculum from KG to Primary 6

A new curriculum has been drawn from “best practice all over the world”. He said since there are no shortcuts to having an educated and skilled workforce, the new curriculum will focus on making Ghanaian children confident, innovative, creative thinkers; digitally literate
and well-rounded patriotic citizens.

3. Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

All is set for the construction of 10 Technical and Vocational Education and Training centres in 2019. He said the new TVET centres will be world class and well-equipped to assure young people that they are not being sent to second rate institutions.

4.Recycling plant at Agbogbloshie

The government will establish a state-of-the-art recycling plant at Agbogbloshie in Accra. He said the construction of the plant will start in April 2019. He stated that punitive measures will be applied to all who create filth in our cities.

Indeed, Kwame Nkrumah benefited from the inspiration of Nnamdi Azikiwe, a Nigerian journalist whom he met during his student days at Achimota School.

The School of Communication Studies, Wisconsin International University College, Accra, is proud to offer training to our many Nigerian students and students from other nations studying here with us. We consider it our sacred duty to share with humanity what we inherited.

Journalism is indeed a social good. And if this blog is to serve humanity then we must live up to those ideals of journalism, chief among which is the idea that news can never be for sale.

What that means also is that the blog should be open to all people on earth who wish to contribute meaningfully to the progress of humanity.

Yes, this blog will remain essentially a training ground for student communications practitioners, but it will no doubt be enhanced by the publication of solid world class content from all over the world.

For wizzbuzzblog.blogspot.com to be effective, a solid editorial policy must be published and enforced. This will be published in due course after wide consultations.

May we continue to 'cherish fearless honesty' and may the 'Black Star of hope and honour to all who thirst for liberty' be our inspiration.

Happy Independence Day.
